Air pollution harms human health and the environment. According to the European Environment Agency, a significant proportion of Europe's population lives in areas, especially cities, where air quality standards are exceeded. Air pollutants emitted in one country can be carried into the atmosphere, contributing to poor air quality in other areas. The European Environment Agency reports that around 90% of European city dwellers are exposed to pollutants in concentrations above air quality levels considered harmful to health. Swiss air quality technology company IQAir has released a report ranking cities on air quality and pollution. According to the report, the most polluted city was named Chiang Mai in Thailand.

The cities of Hanoi in Vietnam and Lahore in Pakistan were ranked 2nd and 3rd respectively in terms of the level of pollution recorded. According to the World Health Organization, the level of air pollution in Moldova, seen from space, is relatively low compared to other European countries, being mostly within the limits of air quality guidelines. Nitrogen dioxide concentrations in Moldova are generally low. This air pollutant comes mainly from cars and other motor vehicles, oil and metal refining, electricity generation, manufacturing industries and food processing. Increased values \u200b\u200bwere observed in and around Chisinau, around the border with Ukraine, especially where the Cuciurgan plant is located, and around the cities of Tiraspol and Râbnița. Chisinau, Tighina and Balti regions have the highest average level of nitrogen dioxide pollution.
