The sound of tremor of a volcano was first recorded by geophysicists who monitor more volcanic eruptions on a Pacific Ocean island. The sound was created by the lightning that spread through the ash clouds of the Bogoslof volcano in the Aleutian islands. The sound was recorded using a microphone 64 kilometers away, on another island. According to The Guardian, the sound of a volcanic thunder has not been recorded so far, largely because it is extremely difficult to differentiate from the volcanic eruption sounds. Between December 2016 and August 2017, the Bogoslof volcano erupted more than 60 times, giving researchers the opportunity to record sound while on the neighboring island of Umnak. In March and June, the microphones recorded the distinctive sound that was heard in Umnak three minutes after a global lightning detection network discovered lightning in the ash clouds above the volcano.
