Have you ever heard of the Ukrainian band DakhaBrakha? . So, if you would like to discover the more The DakhaBrakha troupe, consisting of four members, was created in 2004 at the Center of Contemporary Art in Kyiv (DAKH) by the avant-garde theater director Vladislav Troitskâi, receiving the name which in translation from the old Ukrainian language would mean Theatrical work greatly influenced the band's live performances, with theatrical nuances always presented on stage with strong visual elements, bordering on the absurd and the artistic experience. The four members of the band are the ones who take care of both the vocal part of the songs and the instrumental part: Marko Halanevâci takes care of the voice, goblet drum, tabla, didgeridoo, harmonica, accordion, cajón, jaw harp, Olena Țâbulska – of . But the background is of course Ukrainian. The way of singing is Ukrainian polyphony. That is why it is part of our lives.

The girls are professional folklorists. They have no choice - they studied collective singing and ethno music from childhood and continued to university. I know ethno music from another angle - from my family. My grandmother and grandfather, they all sang. So I make a folklore in the style of home Even though the band initially specialized in experiments with Ukrainian folk music, along the way they started to add to the music they created rhythms from all over the world, thus reaching the full, unique and atmospheric sound specific to DakhaBrakha.

Currently, in the band's music you can distinguish traditional Indian, Arabic, African, Russian and Australian instruments, but the vocal part, performed in the style of traditional Ukrainian music, creates a special transnational sound. The vocals, often mixed with rap and sounds imitated from nature, sound complex and at the same time organic, but bordering on chaos and madness, which, in combination with the instruments, makes the music sound completely different from what we are used to hearing . Precisely because of this, in addition to the international appreciation it has, the band also has many confused reactions, not to say negative. For example, in March 2020, the quartet received the Shevchenko Prize, which is considered very prestigious, and caused a stir in academic les. Some called it At the crossroads of Ukrainian folklore and theater, their musical spectrum is at first slow, rhythmic and intimate, then unleashed, tapping the depths of contemporary roots and rhythms.

To date, the band has released seven albums, and the evolution of their instrumental music can be seen throughout them: # На добраніч (2005); # Ягудки (2007); # На мрачье (2009); # Light (2010); . In March 2011, DakhaBrakha was discovered by Australian WOMADelaide and thus began his rise to the international music scene. Since then, the band has performed over 300 concerts and shows and taken part in major international festivals in Eastern and Western Europe, Russia, Asia, Australia and North America. The last world tour was organized in 2022, after the start of the war in Ukraine. Fun fact: One of the band's most famous collaborations was with the House 99 brand, founded by David Beckham.

The band also created soundtracks for Bitter Harvest, a Canadian film, Fargo, an American TV series, and other productions. At the same time, DakhaBrakha participated in numerous festivals, concerts and tours, but in 2014 the band was invited to participate by presenting globalFEST and was proclaimed by Rolling Stone as I discovered the DakhaBrakha band with the help of Irina, a young woman originally from Ukraine, whom I met in an international project, and the first impression I had was one of mixed feelings. In the end, however, I loved the band with all my heart, and for me it is the kind of music with which you can accompany your moments of meditation, inspiration, as well as the most tragic-dramatic ones. In short, this music can be experienced in many ways, in various contexts, and will find its relevance if you give it a chance. .

Here is the first DakhaBrakha track I heard. (Yes, it's seven minutes long, and you have to at least get to the third minute to understand what phase it is. ) One of the songs that stands out the most, both musically and lyrically, is the song Ванюша (Vaniusha), the events of which take place during the Seven Years' War (1754-1763). The lyrics of the song are quite dark and frightening, and the listeners abroad are impressed by the values \u200b\u200band order of those times, reflected in Ukrainian folklore. The song tells the story of Vaniușa, a soldier fighting in the Seven Years' War.

He returns home at the request of his mother, who informs him that his wife is not attending to her On his return, he cuts off his wife's head with his sword, later discovering that the household is actually in order. After which, he goes to cut off his mother's head, for lying to him - Also, one of DakhaBrakha's most watched videos is that of the song The video, directed by Victor Priduvalov, crowns the opera with musicians dressed in traditional clothes, playing in the most unexpected and even dangerous places in Kyiv. DakhaBrakha dedicated the song was dedicated to Another well-known song from the band's repertoire is Carpathian Rap, which is also one of my favorites. This was released 10 years ago and has become one of the band's The band is currently preparing for its world tour, which starts in Brussels in May.
