Looking for an excuse to consume a glass of wine a day? . Read on about this study! . Study participants who consumed a glass of wine three to four days a week were approximately 30% less likely to develop type II diabetes than those who consumed less than once or only once a week. This is not the first study to show a link between moderate wine consumption and low diabetes risk. . However, it is known that alcohol consumption increases the risk of developing diabetes.
For the new study, researchers looked at data from over 70. 000 healthy Danish adults who have been questioned about their health and drinking habits. They were followed for five years to see who developed type II diabetes. People with the lowest risk for diabetes were those who drank alcohol at moderate and slightly more than moderate levels. Men who drank 14 drinks a week had a risk of diabetes by 43% lower than men who did not drink alcohol at all.
Women who consumed 9 drinks a week had a 58% lower risk than those who did not eat at all. Moderate beer consumption was also associated with a lower risk of diabetes in men in the study, but not for women. Researchers say this could be due to the fact that there were not enough beer-consuming women to show a strong association (most of which are wine drinkers. ) Dr. Ronald Tamler, medical director of the Diabetes Mellitus Sinai Clinical Institute, was not involved in the new study, but confirms the findings of previous research.
